News Lower Sixth Mathematicians Attend Maths Inspiration LIVE 05.12.2024
On Monday, Lower Sixth Mathematics students visited the Cambridge Theatre in Covent Garden for an engaging morning of lectures. Students heard from four experts in their fields, who each gave students an insight into areas of maths extending beyond the typical curriculum, from game theory to the beauty of fractal geometry.
One highlight was a talk on the mathematics of fairness by bestselling author Rob Eastaway, who showed how the mathematical theory behind cutting a cake fairly can be applied to much grander problems, such as making penalty shootouts fairer, and issues of international diplomacy. We also heard engaging and entertaining talks from mathematical artist Ayliean Macdonald, statistical guru Jen Visser-Rodgers, and ‘Stand-Up Mathematician’ Matt Parker.
The event showcased innovative applications of Mathematics, and helped to broaden students’ perspectives on higher education, potential careers, and the many interdisciplinary connections within Mathematics. It was an inspiring day that showcased the real-world impact and potential of their field.
