News Godolphin at CogX 2019 14.06.2019

We were proud to have Sixth Form student Delilah representing the school at CogX 2019, an Expo which brings  together the brightest minds in machine learning and artificial intelligence.

CogX featured 150 exhibitors from the hottest AI and Emerging Tech startups, high-profile speakers from industry, government and academia (which included Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan), and an impressive programme of fascinating talks and insight into the future of AI and emerging technology.

Delilah was speaking as part of Teens in AI – an initiative which exists to inspire the next generation of AI researchers, entrepreneurs and leaders – on the topic ‘A Citizens’ Mandate on AI and Ethics – What comes next?’ alongside Matthew Taylor, CEO of the Royal Society of Arts, Dr Indra Joshi, Digital Health and AI Clinical Lead in the NHS and Marion Oswald, Head of the Centre for Information Rights at the University of Winchester.

Delilah outlined her dream of becoming a Mechatronics Engineer once she leaves Godolphin as it combines her passion for her three favourite subjects: Physics, Maths and Computer Science. She then rattled off an impressive CV which featured being the Head of the Physics and Engineering Society that she runs at school to inspire Year 7s to start thinking about careers in STEM. Delilah told the audience how it was her worst nightmare to work in an office all day stating “I want to be out in the lab. I want to be building robots. I want to be outside solving problems and helping people”.

As part of her Extended Project Qualification, Delilah looked at the population of hedgehogs in the UK and how numbers had fallen from 30 million in the 1950s to as few as one million today and outlined her plans to make a smart hedgehog house that uses microelectronics and machine learning to try and help one of London’s, and the UK’s, most threatened species. She is hoping to scale her project up and continue her research to have an impact on a huge problem facing British wildlife.

We are immensely proud and inspired by Delilah’s passion for emerging technologies and we are extremely excited to see our girls leading the next generation of women in STEM.
