News Exploring Power and Politics: Lower Sixth students visit Parliament, the Supreme Court and Whitehall 08.10.2024

Last Friday, all of the Lower Sixth Politics students went to Parliament.   

They had a guided tour of the building and a political activity, which was a mock election. As the Lower Sixth students were on GCSE study leave when we had our mock election in school last year, this was not something they have done before and they engaged with the activity with real enthusiasm. 

After leaving Parliament the group went through Parliament Square, with its statues of famous political figures, then on to the Supreme Court. The students went around the permanent display of the history of the Court and into the courtrooms. There was also a temporary display of the most significant cases that have come to the Court. 

Finally, they went to Whitehall where we saw the Treasury and Foreign Office as well as a glimpse of Downing Street. While they could not go into the government departments but, by going down the road between the Treasury and Foreign Office, the students got some idea of the scale of government departments.

Overall, the students got a first-hand taste of the three branches of government and they really enjoyed the day.
