On Monday, Lower Sixth Chemistry students visited the Emmanuel Centre in central London for an enlightening day of lectures. Students heard from six experts in their fields, covering a range of topics from Biochemistry to Materials Science.
One highlight was a presentation by forensic scientist Professor Hilary Hamnett, who explored the reality of poisonings depicted in TV and film. Professor Andrea Sella, a synthetic chemist, gave the Lower Sixth a reminder of the unique properties of water, a substance we often take for granted. The day’s discussions extended beyond the typical curriculum, introducing students to advanced topics not covered in Sixth Form.
The event also showcased innovative applications of Chemistry, including the use of biosensors in cancer treatment and research on improving plastic biodegradability. A recycling-themed Kahoot quiz proved to be a crowd favourite, sparking enthusiasm among the students.
The day helped to broaden students’ perspectives on higher education, potential careers, and the many interdisciplinary connections within Chemistry. It was an inspiring day that showcased the real-world impact and potential of their field.
