News Languages Week 2024 22.11.2024
This week, we celebrated the linguistic diversity of our school and the power of global communication for Languages Week. From fascinating talks to cultural workshops, the school buzzed with activities designed to inspire students and foster appreciation for the world’s many languages.
The festivities began with the much-anticipated Languages Week Bake Off, where students showcased stunning cakes inspired by cuisines from around the globe. The Bishop Centre was transformed into a feast for the senses as pupils and staff indulged in these mouthwatering creations during break and lunchtime.
Throughout the week, students immersed themselves in a rich variety of activities celebrating language and culture. Workshops brought languages to life through movement and creativity, with Year 7 learning Flamenco dance and Year 10 exploring the rhythms of Latin America in a Latin dance workshop. Assemblies and guest speakers enriched the experience with thought-provoking topics such as ‘Who Influenced Who?’ for Year 11, the role of languages in a wide range of careers for Year 9 with a trio of Old Dolphins, and a fascinating talk on London’s Little Italy. Beyond the classroom, Mandarin learners visited the British Museum to uncover Chinese cultural artefacts, and Year 8 German pupils embraced creativity by decorating Lebkuchenherzen. The festivities concluded with the House Languages Quiz and a cultural celebration mufti-day, closing a vibrant and memorable week.
Languages Week was an unforgettable experience that united the school community in the joy of learning and celebrating languages. Many thanks to Mrs Corcoran and the Modern Languages and Classics teams for orchestrating such a fantastic week.
