News IB Global Politics Talk: Ellie Evelyn from the Coalition for Global Prosperity 13.06.2024

This term, Lower Sixth IB Global Politics students have started studying the topic of Development. To enrich the topic, we had a visitor in one of our lessons from a charity that promotes the cause of development in poorer countries.

Ellie Evelyn, who is the Events Manager for the Coalition for Global Prosperity, generously gave up her time to talk to the students about the work of her organisation and how she came to be involved in this non-governmental organisation (NGO). She explained their role in promoting the cause of aid for development, focused mainly on raising awareness among policy-makers such as MPs, and shared her experience of accompanying a group to see the work of NGOs in Sierra Leone – some of which she found quite harrowing.

Ellie took questions from the class which were very wide-ranging (especially considering that we have only recently started this topic) and explored both the positive and negative contributions of NGOs to promoting Development.

Her visit added another dimension to the study of the subject and was consistent with the ethos of the course that it is about engaging with Global Politics, not just observing passively from a distance.
