News Hamburg Exchange with Latymer Upper and the Johanneum 20.04.2023
During the Easter holidays, Year 10 German students took part in the historic Hamburg Exchange alongside students from Latymer Upper and our partner school in Germany, the Johanneum.
Despite experiencing particularly chilly temperatures during their visit, the students made the most of the opportunity to experience German culture, hone their linguistic skills and demonstrate their resilience in unfamiliar surroundings. The group attended authentic German school in the mornings, starting early at 7.45am, before heading out on exciting trips to the local attractions such as the Elbphilarmonie (nicknamed the ‘Elphi’), an impressive building of architectural and musical significance; the city of Lübeck, home of delicious almond marzipan, and the Karolinenviertel, a trendy district where we learned about the history of graffiti and street art from a local resident.
In the evenings and over the long Easter weekend, the students spent time with their host families, enjoying the local attractions such as the Miniatur Wunderland, home of the world’s largest model railway, and attractions further afield, with students travelling as far away as Amsterdam and the beautiful German island of Sylt. We are all looking forward to the 45th anniversary of the exchange next year.
