News Literature Week 2022 03.03.2022

The theme of this year’s Literature Week was “Read Yourself Smarter”.  By promoting the benefits of reading non-fiction titles and books written by authors from diverse backgrounds, we aimed to encourage our students to have an open and inquisitive mindset as well as emphasising our shared humanity and opening our eyes to diverse perspectives and opinions.

All week, as part of our Spotted activity, teachers wore a coloured sticker to represent a book genre and students collected House points for all the teachers and genres that they spotted! In addition to this, teachers have been based upstairs in the Library at lunchtime, to talk about books that are important to them. A highlight of the week was Wednesday’s books and cakes session in the library for Year 7 students where they got to quiz the teachers on their favourite books and tuck into some delicious cupcakes.

Thursday was World Book Day and what better occasion for students to dress up in their favourite book character and to enter our special Lower School Fashion Show? The event was led by our Head Girls Team who dressed up as characters from the Wizard of Oz led by Head Girl, Lola, as Dorothy. The winning entries were as follows:
Year 7: Narrative Prize: Liberty; Effort Prize; Team Alice in Wonderland; Creativity Prize: Crayons.
Year 8: Narrative Prize: Mr Men and Little Miss; Effort Prize: Seven Husbands; Creativity Prize: Cambridge Latin Course
Year 9: Narrative Prize: Lady Macbeth; Effort Prize Lemony Snicket; Creativity Prize: Alice in Wonderland.
And a special prize was announced for our very own Head of the Library and lead organiser of Literature Week ‘Where’s Wally’ aka Mr Benton! Congratulations to everyone who made such a tremendous effort with their imaginative costumes.

On Friday, the poet Kat Francois encouraged Year 7 students to discover the beauty and power of poetry and next week Costa winning and Carnegie nominated author, Manjeet Mann, will be talking to Year 8. The House Literature Quiz capped off a busy week., We hope both students and staff have been enthused by all that Literature Week 2022 had to offer.
