News Lower Sixth student Ellison competes in ARTiculation London Heat 13.01.2022

Last week Lower Sixth student Ellison competed in the London Heat of the prestigious ARTiculation Prize for public speaking on Art and Art History.

Ellison went toe-to-toe against talks from seven other Sixth Form students at the Whitechapel Gallery, in what was the most competitive field for years. She gave a compelling and philosophically sophisticated talk on Edward Hopper’s famous painting, Nighthawks, which explored the tensions the painting generates between feelings of isolation, anonymity and confinement on the one hand, and company, familiarity and protection on the other. The heat’s judge, Dr Richard Martin, praised Ellison’s talk for its excellent structure and evocative use of questions and terms to draw the audience into the painting.

Though unlucky not to progress to the next round, Ellison’s performance was a real credit to Godolphin and Latymer.
